GI TAGS OF ANDAMAN & NICOBAR

GI TAGS OF ANDAMAN & NICOBAR: TREASURES OF THE ISLANDS

Geographical Indication (GI) tags are a form of intellectual property protection that recognises products originating from a specific geographical location, reflecting their unique qualities, reputation, and cultural significance. Recently, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands celebrated a significant milestone as seven of their indigenous products were awarded GI tags simultaneously. Recognition to GI Tags of Andaman & Nicobar Island not only glorifies the rich cultural heritage of the Nicobarese and Karen communities but also aims to enhance economic opportunities for these tribal populations.

Seven GI Tags of Andaman & Nicobar are as follows:

1) Nicobari Mat (Chatrai-hileuoi)

The Nicobari people are skilled artisans known for weaving vibrant mats and hangings from locally sourced materials. These mats are symbolic of the tribal culture.

2) Nicobari Hut (To Chanvi Pati – Nyi hupul)

This traditional hut serves as a communal space for gatherings in Nicobari villages. Constructed from locally available materials like cane and planks, these huts play a vital role in community activities such as festivals and dispute resolutions.

3) Padauk Wood Craft

Renowned for its durability and aesthetic appeal, Padauk wood is used to create furniture and various crafts unique to the Andaman Islands. The local craftsmanship emphasizes sustainability, with minimal waste generated during production.

4) Andaman and Nicobar Coconut

Cultivated in the coastal areas of the islands, this coconut variety is noted for its high oil content and rich flavour. It holds cultural significance within local folklore and is integral to the islands’ economy and ecology.

5) Nicobari Tavi-i-Ngaich (Virgin Coconut Oil)

This product is made from fresh coconut meat without any chemical processing, resulting in a pure oil that is free from additives. Its GI tag emphasizes its authenticity, supporting sustainable practices among local producers.

6) Andaman Karen Musley Rice

A traditional staple for the Karen community, this rice variety is cultivated using sustainable methods that respect local biodiversity. Its aromatic flavour and resilience to saline soils make it a prized agricultural product.

7) Nicobari Hodi Craft

The Hodi is an outrigger canoe traditionally built by the Nicobarese using indigenous techniques passed down through generations. Each canoe reflects the unique design preferences of different islands within the Nicobar group.

Impact of GI Tag Recognition

With this recognition, there is hope that Andaman and Nicobar Islands will gain international acclaim for their indigenous products, fostering sustainable development and enhancing tourism opportunities in the region. In conclusion, the GI tag recognition not only serves as a badge of honour for these unique products but also acts as a catalyst for economic growth and cultural preservation in one of India’s most picturesque regions.
