Pranit More show controversy

The Rs. 370 Biryani And The Price Of A Joke: Legality Surrounding The Pranit More Show Controversy

The Pranit More show controversy has sparked nationwide debate after viral clips from a Gurugram stand-up performance led to legal action, public backlash, and discussions on free speech, consent, and ethical comedy. Himanshu Jangra, one of the audience members, made a remark about recovering the money spent on a date through physical intimacy. Another comment by a medical student comparing the genitals of male cadavers has reignited the debate on the link between freedom of speech and ethical responsibility in comedy.

Free Speech In The Age Of Digital Comedy

Freedom of speech and expression, enshrined under Article 19 of the Indian Constitution, forms the heart and spirit of a democratic society. This provision ensures that citizens can openly criticize, express themselves, and form opinions. However, the exercise of this fundamental right demands due caution so that one does not violate or injure the rights of others.[1]

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an unprecedented surge in the creation and consumption of online content. Driven by a burgeoning young demographic and rapid technological expansion, India witnessed an exponential rise in stand-up comedy culture.[2]

The Pranit More show controversy illustrates precisely where Article 19(2) restrictions become operative: when live entertainment content sexualises individuals without consent, demeans women, or circulates material that violates personal dignity across digital platforms. Yet this rapid growth has also brought with it a pressing question: where does comic expression end and social harm begin?

The Incident: What Was Actually Said?

Two remarks from Pranit More’s Gurugram crowdwork show became the trigger for the Pranit More show controversy that is now the subject of active legal and institutional proceedings. He also appeared on Bigg Boss in 2025, one of the biggest reality shows in India, which further increased his nationwide recognition. However, he is currently facing backlash following the viral circulation of two clips recorded during a live show. The clips triggered widespread criticism due to their objectionable content.

During one of the segments, a web developer from Gurugram, Himanshu, made a controversial remark. He stated that he went on a date with a woman and paid Rs. 370 to buy a plate of chicken biryani. In reference to this, he said, “Maine kaha 370 rupaylagehain, main vasooltohkarunga” (“I said I spent Rs. 370, I will definitely recover it”). This comment sparked outrage among internet users.[3]

The centre of the controversy is the term “Vasooli” (recovery). The remark implied recovering the money spent on the date through physical intimacy. The issue of consent was not addressed. During the show, he also allegedly stated that he coerced the woman into a physical relationship.

Violence is not always physical. One need not come into physical proximity to hurt someone. Sometimes, it can occur through a joke, narration, or a simple conversation. What is required is merely a disregard for another person’s autonomy and dignity. Critics argue that this is what occurred in this instance.

Another contentious remark was made by Sejal Pawar, a medical student at KEM Hospital, who insensitively commented about comparing the genitals of the male cadavers (a cadaver is a dead body donated by the family for medical study and research), while sharing her experience about medical college.[4]

What involved Pranit in this controversy was not merely his passive response but also his active participation. Rather than challenging the remark or stopping Himanshu from making such a comment, he added to the joke by saying, “Peak Gurugram content.” Furthermore, he rewarded Himanshu with Rs. 5,000.

Nonetheless, Pranit in his apology video, has acknowledged his lapse in judgment and stated: “Looking back, I should have challenged the remark instead of laughing and moving on. That was a lapse in judgment on my part.” This reflects some degree of accountability; however, critics argue that this doesn’t normalize such attitudes.

Legal Response: FIR And Statutory Provisions

Following the controversy, Maharashtra Cyber registered a case under FIR No. 36/2026 at the Nodal Cyber Police Station. The FIR was filed against Pranit More, Himanshu, Sejal, and others allegedly involved in the dissemination of the material under the following provisions[5]:-

  • 75 (1)(iv)of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,2023– an individual is guilty of sexual harassment if they engage in unwelcome physical advances, request sexual favors, display pornography, or make sexually colored remarks.
  • 75(3) of BNS– Any person found guilty of making sexually colored remarks is liable for imprisonment up to 1 year/ fine/ both.
  • 294 of BNS– It criminalizes the sale, distribution, production, or public exhibition of obscene materials.
  • 353(2) of BNS– criminalizes the publication or circulation of false information or alarming news meant to incite hatred, fear, or communal enmity.[6]
  • 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000, penalizes the publishing or transmitting of obscene material in electronic form.[7] This provision is directly applicable to the Pranit More show controversy, given that clips recorded at a live venue were subsequently shared and re-shared across digital platforms.

Furthermore, formal summons were issued to Pranit More, Himanshu Jangra, and Sejal Pawar to appear before Maharashtra Cyber for questioning and recording of statements.

Additionally, the National Commission for Women (NCW) took Suo Motu cognizance of the matter. The Chairperson of NCW, Vijaya Rahatkar, in her letter addressed to the Director General of Police of Haryana, demanded timely action and a detailed action report.[8]

Meanwhile, the President of All India Medical Students’ Association, Jitendra Singh, commended the comments made by Sejal. He further despised the action of Pranit and contended that people like Pranit are a curse to society, and in the name of comedy, chasing TRPs, and garnering views, they target our sisters and daughters, our religion, and specific individuals.  Lastly, he demanded government of India (GoI) to define the parameters of comedy. [9]

Institutional And Civil Society Responses

Due to her objectionable comment, Sejal is facing an inquiry initiated by KEM Hospital. The Dean of the college, Dr. Harish Pathak, stated that such comments were unacceptable. Dr. Pathak constituted a two-member committee to investigate the matter and recommend appropriate action. [10]

The United Doctors Front (UDF) further escalated its response by serving a formal legal notice. Understanding the purpose and implications of a Legal Notice is important in such disputes. They served a formal legal notice to Pranit More and the organizer of the show. They also approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking Suo Motu cognizance of the matter.

In response to the controversy, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that stand-up comedians should be mindful and should not disregard another person’s right to dignity. He further stated, “Everyone has the right to freedom of expression, and I myself watch stand-up comedy. It is a source of entertainment. But freedom of expression should not become a license. No one should violate the dignity of others. One person’s expression should not infringe upon another person’s right to live with dignity.”[11]

Social Consequences: Trolling, Job Loss, And Suspension

The social fallout from the Pranit More show controversy extended well beyond the courtroom, with all those involved facing intense public criticism across social media platforms.

During an online campaign, netizens tagged Himanshu’s employer, Starvik Design, which reportedly resulted in his termination. Furthermore, those involved publicly apologized on their respective social media accounts. Their social media accounts were also temporarily suspended.

They continue to face significant criticism online. As per official sources, following the preliminary inquiry instituted against Sejal, a 15-day forced leave was imposed on her. Additionally, she was barred from entering the hospital campus, medical college, and hostel premises.

Recent Updates

As per reports, Gurugram Police filed an FIR against comedian Pranit More and audience participant Himanshu Jangra. The FIR was registered at DLF Phase 2 Police Station following a complaint by the National Commission for Women (NCW) and Suo Motu action by the police.

The case invokes Sections 294, 353(3), 75(2), and 75(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 67 of the Information Technology Act.[12]

As digital content continues to influence public discourse, understanding the legal implications of online speech, cyber regulations, and personal accountability has become increasingly important. For legal insights on emerging issues affecting individuals and businesses, visit J.P. Associates.

Conclusion

This Pranit More show controversy has ignited a significant debate over the blurred boundaries between freedom of expression and ethical responsibility in digital entertainment. Beyond legal questions, it also raises broader concerns regarding consent, male entitlement, and the objectification of women.

In essence, freedom of speech and expression is one of the most vital freedoms a democratic society can offer. The question the Pranit More show controversy poses is not whether the law is adequate; it is whether those operating in digital entertainment understand that the law applies to them fully and without exception.
